Harissa (Virgin of Lebanon)

Harissa JouniehJounieh bay as seen from HarissaHigh above Jounieh bay is the gigantic white statue of the Lady of Lebanon (Virgin Mary) stretching her arms towards the city for the past century. Around the statue are the churches and cethedrals of various denominations.

During religious festivals such as Easter, you can see extensive religious parades. At other times, pilgrims climb the spiral staircase around the statue's base. Others just enjoy the fantastic view from the top. There is a restaurant at the Telepherique terminus which serves delicious Lebanese food, grills and great views over Jounieh bay.

You can either get to Harissa by car following a step road with hairpin bends, or take the cable car (Telepherique) from the coastal base uphill. This ride takes about 9 minutes and if you suffer from vertigo, avoid it! The ascent is at a very steep angle and the cars are tiny, taking a maximum of 4 persons. The ride leaves from the Maameltein road, just beyond the municipality building.
